MMIWG

Project type

Remembrance Memorial

Date

2023

Location

Hwy. 16, BC

This project was developed as a conceptual design for a memorial dedicated to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). The proposal aims to create a place of remembrance, reflection, and awareness while honoring the lives of Indigenous women and girls whose loss has profoundly impacted communities across Canada.
The design organizes the memorial as a ceremonial journey. Visitors enter through a sequence of welcoming elements that mark the beginning of the path to remembrance. Along the processional walkway, a series of interpretive installations and landscape features provide opportunities to learn about the history and ongoing impact of the MMIWG crisis. Resting spaces and reflective points are integrated throughout the path to encourage contemplation and gathering.
At the heart of the memorial is a circular gathering structure that frames the sky and symbolizes unity, healing, and collective memory. The wooden enclosure forms a protective space where visitors can sit around a central fire feature and reflect on the stories represented within the memorial. The open structure connects the experience of the memorial to the surrounding landscape and the natural elements.
The site design incorporates native plantings, including fireweed, which serves as a symbolic element of resilience and regeneration. Carefully planned circulation, lighting, and landscape elements guide visitors through the memorial experience while maintaining a respectful and contemplative atmosphere.
The project was developed as a conceptual design while at CTA Design Ltd., with a lead role in architectural design, focusing on the spatial organization of the memorial, development of the central gathering structure, and integration of landscape and interpretive elements that shape the visitor journey.
